Background of Patriots vs Broncos game on October 18

The New England Patriots have a record of 2-2 this season while the Denver Broncos are 1-3 in the win-loss column. The Patriots are coming off a loss to Kansas City Chiefs (26-10) while the Broncos just get a win over the New York Jets (37-28). The Patriots and Broncos last played against each other on November 12, 2017. The Broncos lost that game against the Patriots 47-16.

According to ESPN, Broncos Coach Vic Fangio is having “to take more risks on defense” this season.

Patriots Coach Bill Belichick will be looking for a win in New England to steady a Patriots team without Tom Brady. Comparatively, Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers have a 3-2 record this season.

Who will make it back to the Super Bowl first: Tom Brady or Bill Belichick? Or were both infinitely better off together on the same team? Only time will answer that question.

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton will have an opportunity to begin avenging his 0-3 record and Super Bowl 50 loss against the Broncos with a win today. Newton was the 2015 regular season MVP when his Carolina Panthers faced off against the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl. Can Newton finally break the streak as a member of the Patriots? Or will the Denver Broncos continue to be a thorn on Newton’s career win/loss record?

According to ESPN reporters Mike Reiss’ (and Field Yates) tweet below, a Patriots player tested positive for COVID-19 recently and Friday’s Patriots practice was cancelled. However, the New England Patriots’ practice facility was open the following Saturday morning.

The Patriots have James Ferentz and Byron Cowart on the team reserve COVID-19 list according to ESPN.

Denver Broncos Injury Report

CBS reports that the Broncos have cut Blake Bortles with quarterback Drew Lock set to make his return against the Patriots today. Veteran QB Blake Bortles was originally signed in free agency after Lock suffered a shoulder injury.

The Broncos’ Noah Fant and Melvin Gordon III are both listed as out for today’s game against the Patriots according to DenverBroncos.com. Coach Vic Fangio assured media members that Gordon is out with an “illness totally unrelated to COVID.” Fant has been limited in practice since suffering an ankle injury during a game against the New York Jets on October 1st. It will be the first missed game of Fant’s career.

Denver running backs Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman are expected to be available for today’s Patriots game.

The New England Patriots are currently 2nd in the AFC East division with wins over the Miami Dolphins and Las Vegas Raiders. The Patriots started last season with an 8-game winning streak comparatively. The Denver Broncos are 3rd in the AFC West division with 1 win over the New York Jets. The Broncos started last season with a 4-game losing streak.

The Patriots made the postseason last year and lost to the Tennessee Titans while the Broncos missed the NFL playoffs. The Broncos last made the NFL postseason in 2015 where they won the Super Bowl against Cam Newton’s Carolina Panthers as mentioned earlier. The team hasn’t been in the NFL playoffs since.
