Is lying to sell hope to a hopeless population ever morally right or ethical? Is the tall tale of new Eden’s survivor any different from Melanie Cavill impersonating Mr. Wilford?

This Snowpiercer Season 3 Episode 3 recap contains spoilers.

Andre Layton believes he is entirely just in his revolution against Mr. Wilford. That lying to sway Snowpiercer’s skeptical population is necessary for their own good. So what has changed under new leadership?

Supposedly obsolete class systems are roaring back with Miss Audrey’s banishment to Third Class. Eternal exile from her job at the night car. Punishment for political loyalties outside of Layton’s revolution despite being a kidnapped prisoner of war.

Layton will place his people through hardship for the next year and beyond over a dream sold as reality. No different in actuality than Melanie Cavill carrying on as Mr. Wilford. What happens if New Eden turns out to be a mirage? A sham?

Ruth ironically supported Layton in the endeavor, feeling it was a necessary evil… Forgetting how Melanie’s revelation personally injured her psyche. What happens if the train’s people discover New Eden was a lie created to exploit their desperation at their weakest moment? Will they simply fall in line like Ruth?

One thing’s for sure, this gamble by Layton will cause those lukewarm to fully embrace Wilford should New Eden’s fable crumble… There will be no third chance for Layton to win over the people should new Eden not exist. A frozen wasteland in its place. As Wilford has prophesied.

Would Layton have accepted being lied to back in the Tail? Unlikely… And his former running buddy might not be either when he finds out the truth.
