Perpetual Grace, LTD revealed the truth behind Walker, Texas Ranger’s murder mystery on tonight’s episode.
This recap contains spoilers for Perpetual Grace, LTD Season 1 Episode 8.
Paul Allen Brown unexpectedly confessed to New Leaf that he’s responsible for a teenage girl’s death on the latest Perpetual Grace, LTD… But not in the way you would imagine. In a series of black-and-white flashbacks reminiscent of Memento, truth met fiction. It turns out the ole’ grifter magician wasn’t necessarily lying but he wasn’t telling the whole truth either. Paul Allen Brown did not murder his bright-eyed protege but he is responsible for her death.
The girl in question had stumbled upon Paul’s plan to defraud her father’s church for two million dollars. Despite this, she trusted her magic mentor unconditionally. During a trip home post-magic competition Paul introduced her to a cabin where she could practice her Houdini handcuffs trick. What he seemingly did not tell her was those were no magic hand cuffs but real ones. Thus, she would be unable to tell her father about Paul’s scheme.
Paul would leave her there with food and water among other amenities with the intention to return in 3 days… When he already would obtain the two million dollars, if everything went according to plan. However, the young magician in training was infatuated with doing the Houdini handcuff trick in the water. Even though Paul constantly told her to stay away from the water, that she wasn’t ready.
She would manage to escape the magic cabin via chimney and looked toward the river. The rest as you might guess, is history. Paul blames himself for what happened and wishes he hadn’t been born… As she would still be alive.
New Leaf breaks down
Prior to the confession, Paul and James managed to talk New Leaf out of his revenge plan. After a couple of missed gunshots at Paul, New Leaf broke down, citing that he should rename himself, ‘Scumbag because that’s what he is.’
In desperation mode, Paul and James attempted to convince a saddened New Leaf of desecration. Paul needs to produce his ‘parents’ bodies’ or the scam is up. With New Leaf’s Chili style beeper going off, two elderly placeholders just happen to be available. James asked New Leaf to let them run over the bodies with a truck, so they’ll be unrecognizable for the whole death South of the border angle. In return, he promised to reestablish New Leaf’s LensCrafters dream.
Walker is suspicious
Meanwhile, Wes Walker partially interrogated Glenn about his Mexico trip. Glenn seemingly either played dumb or genuinely did not know some of Walker’s terminology. However, when it came to the important question, if he knew Paul Allen Brown… He said no. Protecting the perceived interests of his gang, ‘The Special Boys’ as coined by James.
James by the way, had the ankle bracelet placed back on by Walker. His contact Hector was so moved by Pa that he decided he’s out of the plan. Hector’s happy where he is… With his family.
No word yet of Pa and Ma’s fate though viewers learned they want to be buried with a comb and hairbrush respectively. It was also revealed that Dave is not Ma’s biological brother but an orphanage brother. Both simply wanted family to belong to more than anything… Fiveever.
