Perpetual Grace, LTD featured an emotional performance by Kurtwood Smith’s Uncle Dave with a hug that showed a different side of the actor.

This recap contains spoilers for Perpetual Grace, LTD Season 1 Episode 7.

Tonight’s Perpetual Grace, LTD saw a reunion between Uncle Dave and his nephew Paul Allen Brown that felt pure. Actor Kurtwood Smith played the tough, hard-nosed father on comedy That ’70s Show for more than a decade but Perpetual Grace, LTD showed a softer side of him this episode. One where a family member’s screw ups do not beget a “Dumbass!” iconic slogan but make his eyes swell up with tears. The ultimate authority figure in one role becomes like silly putty through a single hug in another. Uncle Dave was ready to look past a potential murder on his nephew’s part based on Paul’s word alone. Truly a display that blood is thicker than water. Kurtwood Smith played up the moment perfectly, immersing the audience in the family bond. Uncle Dave agreed to not speak to Walker any longer upon Paul’s request.

Paul Allen Brown manipulated the situation by reminding his uncle he supports him. That he didn’t believe the accusation against his Uncle and neither should Dave belive the murder accusation against Paul. Kurtwood Smith’s simple closing of the eyes sold the whole story without anything needing to be said. Uncle Dave just wants Paul parents (his sister) to be buried with respect. As such, Uncle Dave accepted Paul’s narrative against his better judgement.

Meanwhile, James finally broke during a conversation with Glenn about their dads. At first, James tried to cover his tracks after revealing his father had gone into space and now wandered his hometown in the same spacesuit. When Glenn asked if Pastor Brown had been into space, James caught himself and said ‘Yes,’ confirming the white lie. However, moments later James admitted everything short of hitting Glenn’s head. His real name, the scam and who in town was after him. Despite this, Glenn remained as positive as ever, and wanted to give his fresh sombrero to James instead of his father. James convinced Glenn to give his father another chance and give him the fresh sombrero. Glenn obliged. Unfortunately for James, Glenn’s father showed off the sombrero to Walker Texas Ranger.

In a surreal edition of cash cab questions, Pa’s childhood murder accomplice flashed back to the scene of the crime. On the other side of the border, Pa and Ma’s GTA moment backfired. Their hostages turned out to be well connected. Instead of a computer, the hostages led them back to their gang compound where they were surrounded…

Perpetual Grace, LTD co-creator Steven Conrad to do Reddit AMA‏ tonight

Perpetual Grace, LTD co-creator Steven Conrad will do a Reddit Ask Me Anything‏ tonight at 8 pm ET / 5 pm PST in r/IAMA.

After the doozy of a cliffhanger funeral in EPIX’ Perpetual Grace, LTD Season 1 finale, co-creator Steven Conrad will be fielding a lot of questions. Director/Writer Steven Conrad announced on Twitter last Friday that he would be doing an AMA on Wednesday, August 14 at 5 pm PST / 8 pm ET. Outside of Perpetual Grace, LTD, Steven Conrad will likely be asked if there’s a future for Patriot on another platform. Amazon confirmed in late July during a TCA press tour that they have no plans to pursue a third season of Patriot. Might EPIX pick it up?

Will there be a second season of Perpetual Grace, LTD? Star Jimmi Simpson certainly hopes so according to a New York Post interview. Would legend Sir Ben Kingsley even be available presumably for a second season? If he is to return in his current co-leading role and not for a cameo a decision by EPIX will likely have to arrive quick. Would Luis Guzmán similarly return for a second season? Was the bullet to the chest by Pa a way to write him off the series? Is Sheriff Hector Contreras truly done for? All excellent questions for Steven Conrad! Hint, hint…

Perpetual Grace, LTD certainly took a bold leap by ending Season 1 with James about to give a eulogy… Especially, after Walker’s realization he’d been played as well as Pa and Ma driving back home with haste. Should a second season never commence, the whole series will be left up in the air. A creative move that takes guts and faith in your craft. Perhaps, Steven Conrad has already been told by EPIX that Season 2 is practically a done deal? Will there be an announcement tonight?

Reddit user Ultragrrrl got fans hyped about Steven Conrad’s upcoming AMA tonight with great response. Reddit Patriot fans were similarly excited for Steven Conrad’s AMA.

Pennyworth series premiere review and recap: British action done right

EPIX’ Pennyworth series premiere brandished a sharp Alfred Pennyworth with intriguing possibilities, adversaries, and immersive, picturesque British scenery.

This review and recap contains spoilers for Pennyworth Season 1 Episode 1.

Pennyworth’s remarkable sky-high production values and film-like execution told Alfred’s story with all the glitz and glamour you’d expect for Batman’s iconic butler. Alfred called Esmé’s accent posh but it was the sensational British presentation, fashion and decor of the premiere that sold the meaning of the word. Though we’ve seen Alfred step out of Wayne Manor before and more than an inkling of his capabilities, young Alfred is a whole new ball game. Even relatively minor details like Esmé referring to him as ‘Alfie’ showcases a new side of Alfred. Any true Batman fan will enjoy the “Pilot” episode for the Thomas Wayne / Alfred interactions alone.

Most telling was the animosity between Alfred and his father toward the Butler profession. The rift in question was Alfred wanting to be his own man. In response, his father proclaimed, ‘Nobody is their own man.’ The verbal joust was ominous, as we all know, Alfred ends up a butler… Adding a nihilistic, predetermined outlook on life. Raising the question, if we have any agency in life at all? Despite Alfred’s grand security business aspirations and rising to the occasion all episode… We know he’ll eventually follow in his father’s footsteps. Dark and foreboding as all Batman lore should be.

Pennyworth’s inaugural debut started with the introduction of the mysterious Bet Sykes taking a Duke hostage to be tortured. As a member of the Governor’s endorsed Raven Society, bent on bringing Britain back from ‘weak-willed men,’ Sykes did the dirty ‘ugly’ work. Work ‘presumably’ that needed to be done for the country’s own good. It would set the tone for an action filled episode debating the very ethos of the Queen and what it means to be English. We soon met a still bouncer/doorman Alfred disposing of some bad guys to assist an unknown Thomas Wayne with his drunk sister.

Meeting Thomas Wayne

Wayne would exchange cards with Pennyworth after his sister accidentally punched Alfred in the nose after Thomas ducked out of the way. Alfred insisted on giving his ‘Securities’ card as to legitimize his business. Sykes would later attempt to have a hit on Thomas Wayne and though he escaped, she found that very same Alfred’s Securities card.

Esmé is kidnapped by Bet Sykes

Ever the Gentleman Alfred would charm dancer Esmé to a park date after she gave her handkerchief to stop his nosebleed. Promising to return the handkerchief on Saturday when they’re both off of work. Despite opposing views with Alfred as a 10-year military man using the “Queen’s Bullets” and Esmé being against all forms of war and murder, she fell in love with him. However, a dinner with Alfred’s parents sent the relationship reeling. After some choice words from Alfred’s father, Esmé decided to end their pairing despite loving Alfred. Right then and there, Sykes would capture Esmé in a drive-by kidnapping. She demanded Thomas Wayne back from Alfred for an exchange.

Alfred Pennyworth was beside himself, bewildered and confused. He recruited his old military pals to assist in taking Wayne hostage. The plan was a success but the exchange was not, merely a trap as Wayne had predicated. However, Alfred and co soon laid waste to Sykes’ group and regained leverage. Meanwhile, Esmé attempted a failed escape after a strange requested dance by Sykes. Both were high tier cinematic artistry from the frenzied firefight to the staircase kick on Sykes by Esmé. Her screams for help among an aristocratic dinner, being ignored, looked like something right out of The Purge.

One of The Raven Society’s men told Alfred where Esmé was being held and he would attempt a one-man rescue. Though outnumbered, and temporarily taken hostage himself, Alfred’s battalion managed to overwhelm The Raven Society. Alfred rescued Esmé but she still wanted to breakup.

An Unexpected Visitor

Upon returning home, Alfred Pennyworth found his parents taken hostage by Sykes. She wanted revenge on Esmé for hitting her and trying to escape. Just then Esmé showed up at Alfred’s doorstep wanting to get back together. Sykes slapped Esmé who returned the favor, allowing enough daylight for Alfred and his family to take back control. Soon after, Thomas Wayne would offer Alfred a security position, which he declined. Alfred received a medal from the Queen for his actions against The Raven Society. However, she mysteriously asked him to stay forever silent on what he did for his country…

EPIX’ Pennyworth opened with a smashing premiere!

Perpetual Grace, LTD revealed the truth behind Walker, Texas Ranger’s murder mystery on tonight’s episode.

This recap contains spoilers for Perpetual Grace, LTD Season 1 Episode 8.

Paul Allen Brown unexpectedly confessed to New Leaf that he’s responsible for a teenage girl’s death on the latest Perpetual Grace, LTD… But not in the way you would imagine. In a series of black-and-white flashbacks reminiscent of Memento, truth met fiction. It turns out the ole’ grifter magician wasn’t necessarily lying but he wasn’t telling the whole truth either. Paul Allen Brown did not murder his bright-eyed protege but he is responsible for her death.

The girl in question had stumbled upon Paul’s plan to defraud her father’s church for two million dollars. Despite this, she trusted her magic mentor unconditionally. During a trip home post-magic competition Paul introduced her to a cabin where she could practice her Houdini handcuffs trick. What he seemingly did not tell her was those were no magic hand cuffs but real ones. Thus, she would be unable to tell her father about Paul’s scheme.

Paul would leave her there with food and water among other amenities with the intention to return in 3 days… When he already would obtain the two million dollars, if everything went according to plan. However, the young magician in training was infatuated with doing the Houdini handcuff trick in the water. Even though Paul constantly told her to stay away from the water, that she wasn’t ready.

She would manage to escape the magic cabin via chimney and looked toward the river. The rest as you might guess, is history. Paul blames himself for what happened and wishes he hadn’t been born… As she would still be alive.

New Leaf breaks down

Prior to the confession, Paul and James managed to talk New Leaf out of his revenge plan. After a couple of missed gunshots at Paul, New Leaf broke down, citing that he should rename himself, ‘Scumbag because that’s what he is.’

In desperation mode, Paul and James attempted to convince a saddened New Leaf of desecration. Paul needs to produce his ‘parents’ bodies’ or the scam is up. With New Leaf’s Chili style beeper going off, two elderly placeholders just happen to be available. James asked New Leaf to let them run over the bodies with a truck, so they’ll be unrecognizable for the whole death South of the border angle. In return, he promised to reestablish New Leaf’s LensCrafters dream.

Walker is suspicious

Meanwhile, Wes Walker partially interrogated Glenn about his Mexico trip. Glenn seemingly either played dumb or genuinely did not know some of Walker’s terminology. However, when it came to the important question, if he knew Paul Allen Brown… He said no. Protecting the perceived interests of his gang, ‘The Special Boys’ as coined by James.

James by the way, had the ankle bracelet placed back on by Walker. His contact Hector was so moved by Pa that he decided he’s out of the plan. Hector’s happy where he is… With his family.

No word yet of Pa and Ma’s fate though viewers learned they want to be buried with a comb and hairbrush respectively. It was also revealed that Dave is not Ma’s biological brother but an orphanage brother. Both simply wanted family to belong to more than anything… Fiveever.
