Dani Martinez took a Stage Victory for Columbia in Stage 13 of the 2020 Tour de France (the 107th iteration of the event). Martinez’ time was 5 hours, 1 minute, 47 seconds with Germany’s Lennard Kämna (5 hours 1 minute 51 seconds) and Maximilian Schachmann (5 hours 2 minutes 38 seconds) right there with him. It was quite a victory at Puy Mary, and Martinez won his first Stage of this year’s Tour de France.
Slovenia’s Primož Roglič remains in the overall lead at 56 hours, 35 minutes, and 35 seconds. Tadej Pogačar, also representing Slovenia, is currently in the second overall spot at 56 hours, 35 minutes, and 19 seconds. Pogačar moved ahead from the 5th to 2nd spot. Columbia’s Egan Bernal follows with 56 hours, 35 minutes, and 34 seconds. Four of the top overall 10 represent Columbia.
The defending Tour de France champion Egan Bernal commented, “I did my best. The others were stronger than I was. I couldn’t do more,” according to Velo News. Bernal felt his numbers were “his best ever” and the others were “simply faster”.
That has to sting for Bernal to post up great numbers, in fact feel they were his best ever, and still be unable to stave off your competitors from claiming the #1 spot. Certainly demoralizing. But the number #3 spot is nothing to scoff at. For anyone other cyclist but a defending Tour de France Champion, it might be a career pinnacle high point.
Stage 15: Lyon to Grand Colombier will be 174.5 KM on mountain terrain.
