Mayor Eric Adams: This is such a significant moment, I think in our entire city. Last year when I took office, this parade prior to that in 2021 was in Central Park. And the streets of our city are where we recognize our various culture and ethnic groups that are here as part of our overall melting pot and energy of the city.
So our position was clear. The streets belong to all New Yorkers, and we wanted you to move outside of the shadows of a beautiful park and coming to the streets of our city and march to show your vibrance, your inclusiveness, and your community.
And so as the Mayor, I am the first Mayor to march in this parade with you. And I’m proud to be here and march with you.
First Mayor to march in the Persian Day parade, the first Mayor to march in the Polish Day parade. The first Mayor to march in so many parades as we celebrate our diversity of this great city, this city belongs to us all! No one lives in the shadow.
We live in the beauty of Central Park West, Madison Avenue, Fifth Avenue. And to come here today and show you how much I appreciate your contribution to the beauty of this city.
You are a community that believes in children, families, business, public safety, and lifting up our great city. As we continue to aspire and grow.
This city is not coming back. New York is back, and today we’re celebrating the greatness of this great country, this great community.
But on behalf of all New Yorkers, I want you say today’s procession coincides with Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which is observed each May to honor the remarkable achievements and rich customs of AAPI Americas across our city and nation.
The parade’s Grand Marshal this year is such an important contributor. And the former competitive figure skater who in 1992 became the first Asian American (Kristi Yamaguchi) to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics games.
I’m grateful to be here, to march with you, and announce today as the Mayor of the City of New York, today is Japan Parade Day! Congratulations to you!
