Last Man Standing returns after a quick two-week break on FOX tonight (5/3) at 8 p.m. EST / 7 p.m. Central. You can catch the show’s latest episode “The Favorite” online via live stream with FOX’s official live stream or with a free seven-day trial at Fubo TV.
It’s the first of two final Last Man Standing season 7 episodes before Mike Baxter takes a bow until season 8. According to The Hollywood Reporter, FOX has renewed the Tim Allen-led series for the 2019-2020 broadcast season. Actress Nancy Travis (Vanessa Baxter) has done a fantastic job alongside Michael Douglas on Netflix’s The Kominsky Method and as such she’ll be reprising two lead characters this fall. Deadline confirmed Travis will indeed return on The Kominsky Method’s second season after receiving fan and critical acclaim for the role of Lisa.
Last episode “Yass Queen” saw Mike Baxter attempting to teach Mandy the value of building a business gradually through adversity. Mandy Baxter’s confidence had risen to cloud nine after speaking with fashionista Celia [Melissa Peterman], a distributor interested in featuring Mandy’s ideas for a new fashion line. Although Mike was skeptical of the new fledgling partnership he was more interested to hear where Mandy would get capital for a project on such a scale.
Mandy suggested her parents would prove their strong belief in her by investing in the project. Though Vanessa wanted to give her the means right away, remembering how she almost gave up on the dream earlier this season, Mike was not as fond of the idea. He recalled Mandy’s penchant for always having another best idea and another best idea, worrying how long her keenness in the project would last.
Eventually, Mike would come to a compromise after doing an episode of Outdoor Man discussing the importance of the vital building blocks of business. Baxter being a thorough believer in capital size being grounded upon a return, suggested a different kind of investment. He would task Mandy with redesigning one of Outdoor Man’s failing items and should she succeed with a minor investment for it, she’d receive another larger investment and so forth. The ball rolling uphill slowly for a complete fashion-line rather than giving complete funding instantly.
Meanwhile, Ed Alzate had Kyle summarize his decades of memoir tapes for a future novel on his life… Only Kyle couldn’t locate anything truly interesting, even with Chuck’s help! Towards the end of the episode Chuck and Kyle presented Ed with a single scrap of paper. When questioned about why he would just mention spearmint gum, Ed went into a whole story about how he received it to remember home from a fellow solider in the military. Ever since, he’d never went a day without a piece of spearmint gum in his pocket because of that day.
Both Chuck and Kyle were moved, as Ed realized he’s a storyteller that needs an active audience rather than a microphone. Kyle volunteered happily to listen to Ed recount his tales and transcribe them for him.
The episode would end with fashionista Celia being irritated with Mike at the perception that he’d stolen Mandy’s design from her. Mike replied that he’d been expecting her and signaled for a sharlpy dressed Chuck and Kyle to walk in. Chuck introduced them as being from the law office of “James, Earl, and Jones!” in a classic moment. Celia would decide to abandon asking for a revenue cut… And ask both Chuck and Kyle to call her!
Mike and Chuck get their game on when Ed has a pinball machine installed in the office; Kristen and Mandy become jealous of a poem Vanessa wrote for Jen.
Mike Baxter shows off his pinball arcade skills while blindfolded to Ed and Kyle in the preview trailer below. The episode description makes it sound like Mike and Chuck will have a bit of an old-school competition to decide who the best truly is!
