76ers forward Tobias Harris scored 37 points on 51.7% FG shooting in Game 1 of this NBA Playoffs series. While franchise player Joel Embiid scored 30 points of his own on 56.3% FG. Embiid also notably went to the free throw line 13 times, scoring 12 of those 13 shots. Meanwhile, 76ers point guard Ben Simmons had 15 rebounds and 15 assists despite only scoring 6 points (including going 0 of 6 from the charity stripe).

The Philadelphia 76ers ultimately took the game with a 125-118 victory against the Washington Wizards. Bradley Beal was the high scorer of the night for the Wizards, scoring 33 points on 56.3% FG and grabbing 10 rebounds. Russell Westbrook similarly picked up 14 boards from the guard position but scored only 16 points on 41.2% FG shooting.

The Washington Wizards actually shot the ball better than the Philadelphia 76ers overall, 55.7% FG to 49.5% FG. However, they turned the ball over at a higher clip, 16 turnovers to the 76ers’ 11. This Playoff game was mainly won at the free throw line, where the 76ers had 33 attempts, converting 23 of them. The Wizards had a better percentage at the line overall, going 12 of 15, but simply did not draw as many fouls.

Obviously, Embiid in the post is key to the 76ers’ extensive trips to the line. The Wizards have no real answer for Embiid, not to mention they gave away 10 steals to the 76ers. TNT commentator Charles Barkley actually fell asleep during Game 1, which Shaq played back proof of. Not exactly the greatest highlight of a series to show to basketball fans iffy about an 8th seed’s chances.

The Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics 2 vs 7 seed has similarly had a feel where the higher seed simply outmatches their opponent. Although the Wizards didn’t fare too badly on paper compared to the eye test. They have a better chance of turning this series around than the Celtics at the moment.

If the Washington Wizards drop today’s game, it’ll be extremely difficult to make a valiant, unprecedented comeback. The Wizards need to split the games in Philly to have a shot of making this a series. If they go back to Washington with their backs against the wall, down 0-2, the 76ers will look to close the series out. A blowout will then likely follow with the momentum on the 76ers’ side.

It’s unknown if this Westbrook/Beal duo will return next year necessarily, post season trades may occur. So, this could be their only real chance at proving themselves in the playoffs as a backcourt scoring duo.
