1) Clean 1 on 1 post up into the fadeaway shot on Kawhi
Playoff basketball is what separates the men from the boys and a true superstar is never afraid of the opposition. In the GIF above, Luka forgoes looking for a mismatch and goes right at Kawhi Leonard. Disregarding his esteemed defensive reputation and strength.
Instead, Luka backs Kawhi down considerably before shooting the fade away over him. A clean swish follows.
2) Luka Doncic gets revenge for Game 1 Kawhi Leonard Dunk
There was much taunting by the Clippers in Game 1 post-Kawhi dunk on the Mavericks’ Maxi Kleber… Clearly, Luka didn’t take kindly to it. This early game statement dunk was an indirect response to the perceived slight.
The Clippers’ Marcus Morris Sr. was on the receiving end of this revenge dunk. Karma perhaps, as Morris was one of the main players taunting Kleber originally.
3) The post up tease into the catch and shoot
Here we see Luka Doncic tease a post up, distracting Tim Hardaway Jr’s defender #8 Marcus Morris just enough to give him space. Doncic senses the defense collapsing on him and immediatley passes to an open Tim Hardaway Jr… Who happens to be a 39.1% three point shooter on the year.
Easy three and makes the Clippers’ defense think twice about attempting a double team any time Luka posts up.
4) Late quarter 3 pointer as demoralizer
There’s nothing like an impromptu late quarter 3-pointer to demoralize an entire squad. The Dallas Mavericks were already up by six as time was winding down in the third quarter of Game 2. Luka shot a one-legged three to put the Mavs up 9 against the Los Angeles Clippers.
A healthy lead to start the fourth quarter. Luka Doncic appears to really like the matchup against Paul George, as he hit some of his most difficult shots against him in Game 2.
5) Difficult post up against Paul George sets tone
It’s clear from this early difficult shot against Paul George, why the Clippers’ defense is forced to respect Luka from every area on the court. Luka constantly posting up on the inside is a big reason why the Mavericks’ three point shooters are left open in a catch and shoot capacity. This was Luka’s first shot of the night setting the tone for his team from the top on down. After all, it starts with leadership.
6) Luka crosses over Paul George for Clean 3
Luka Doncic hit two threes and that post up above on Paul George for the night. Here we see Luka crossing over George before the step back three. Clean and effortless looking, despite a top grade defensive player being on him. It’s possible this cross over led to the revenge cross over by George on Kristaps Porzingis later in the game.
The Dallas Mavericks are currently up 2-0 against the Los Angeles Clippers going into Game 3 tonight. Luka Doncic is averaging a scorching 35 points per game on 50.5% FG through the first two games. The Mavericks’ franchise player is also averaging 9 assists, 8.5 rebounds, and 42% from beyond the arch.
Luka is scoring 5 threes a game on 12 attempts. He had a triple double to start this playoff series. He’s scored 70 points, dished 18 assists, and picked up 17 rebounds total through the first two.
The Dallas Mavericks will return to their home court, American Airlines Center, for Game 3. Maxi Kleber and the Clippers Serge Ibaka are listed as day-to-day on the injury report. It’s likely they’ll play, especially Ibaka with the Clippers on the heels of being down 0-3. Maybe even a potential sweep…
