This Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie recap contains spoilers for the English Dub of Season 1 Episode 3 streaming on Crunchyroll. (“Misfortune, Followed by Sunshine”)
The latest Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie English Dub begins with Shuu Inuzuka giving Yuu Izumi a pair of movie theater tickets that are good until Sunday. Shikimori overhears the exchange in their high school class and patiently waits for Izumi to ask her out. Izumi does as such and Shikimori immediatley agrees to the date for tomorrow.
Overnight, Izumi reflects on all the times his bad luck has impacted his dates with Shikimori. Izumi recalls dropping his wallet and discovering only when he’s about to pay on a prior date. Losing an entire month’s allowance! Despite Shikimori always playing it off as “no big deal”, Izumi decides to prepare for any scenario.
Meanwhile, Shikimori looks through magazines trying to figure out “how to look cute without trying too hard.” She tries out a dozen outfits but unhappy with any. She’s temporarily interrupted by her brother Fuji Shikimori…
Who asks what ‘kind of friend’ she’s going to the movies tomorrow with? She replies, “the kind that’s none of your business,” and gets back to her magazines. Fuji smiles, and tells his sister to ‘have fun’.
Izumi packs a backpack with two umbrellas in case it rains on the way to their movie date… And ties a wallet with a string to his jeans so he doesn’t lose all his money again.
He also packs water bottles in case the pair get thirsty during their date. Of course, this leads to the backpack becoming outrageously heavy eventually. The strap on his backpack rips the next morning, naturally.
On the train ride over, Izumi fantasizes how their movie date will go just perfectly. When they arrive to the cinema, Izumi implores Shikimori to decide on the movie, that he’s always choosing what they’ll watch.
This leads Micchon Shikimori to pick a horror flick, showing a new side of her to Izumi… And a side he didn’t know about himself, mainly that he’s terrified of horror movies!
Izumi nervously shakes throughout the film until Shikimori holds his hand. After the movie, Shikimori openly regrets choosing a horror picture but Izumi makes her feel better. “No way I could have watched that alone, having you with me made me feel great!”
Afterwards, Izumi wants to take Shikimori out to an expensive dessert place. Izumi is as confident as ever, only to realize he’s lost his wallet again because the string ripped. Izumi is embarrassed but just in the nick of time, his parents spot the doting couple in the mall. Motoko and Akisada Izumi invite Shikimori over for dinner.
Shikimori is beside herself at all the tasty food Izumi’s parents have prepared. Akisada, Yuu’s father comments that they always cook too much food and that Shikimori is always welcome over.
Yuu Izumi falls asleep for a post-dinner nap… And Motoko confesses to Shikimori about being worried about Yuu’s bad luck since he was a child. A flashback shows Izumi covered in band aids, trying to downplay his bad luck to his mother.
Motoko asks of Shikimori not to leave him because of the constant, never-ending streak of bad luck. “We both know he has bad luck, and I’m sure it’ll cause you problems.” Shikimori comments that she knows Izumi is “no stranger to trouble, and maybe some people pity him because of that… But I’m not one of them.”
Shikimori continues, “I never thought of him (Izumi) as weak or felt pity. His nature is not a fault. His bad luck has made him a good person. He understands pain better than anyone else I know.”
“In spite of that, he never pities himself and always shows concern for others. Believe me, Izumi has so much strength inside of him.”
Micchon Shikimori then tells Motoko, “So you don’t have to worry. I’ll always make sure he’s protected.” Motoko then jokes that she’s ‘starting to wish’ Shikimori was her girlfriend.’
Her husband Akisada overhears and jokes himself, “Having an affair right in front me? I’m devastated!”
Izumi wakes up to see Shikimori competing against his father Akisada in a boxing video game. Motoko tells Shikimori to “come back soon and don’t you forget, our home is your home.” Izumi walks Shikimori home and apologizes for falling asleep but Shikimori replies that she loved getting to see his “sleeping face”.
The Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie Episode 3 English Dub ends with Shikimori asking Izumi to see a buddy-cop movie with her next time. Izumi agrees without hesitation, “I’m down if you are!”
