This Rent-a-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 1 recap contains spoilers for “Dream and Girlfriend”.
Kazuya bought a ticket to see his beloved Mizuhara’s all or nothing hail mary performance in front of an important director. Her dream to be an actress was hanging and the balance, and so was her future as a rental girlfriend. Chizuru Ichinose, who performed under her real name on the playbill, delivered an otherworldly acting showcase.
The crowd loved her as the clumsy, hungry ninja who throws fish cake shurikens. She was riding the high post-show until Chizuru spotted the blonde lead… A sponsor’s niece who’d known the director since she was a child, being the one picked for future roles. “Nobody else even had a chance!” two other actresses gossiped.
In the end, all of Chizuru Ichinose’s notes, her hard work, merit, meant nothing under the boot of nepotism. Chizuru skipped the wrap party and headed home.
Meanwhile, Sumi Sakurasawa spotted Kazuya in the audience but chose to say nothing realizing his love for Mizuhara. Kazuya bumped into Chizuru, dropping a playbill for the show, busted!
At first Chizuru was furious, telling Kazuya he needed to learn to control himself. Before commenting that she couldn’t stop Kazuya from buying a ticket to see her. Kazuya couldn’t stop complimenting Chizuru’s performance but she became defensive. Asking him ‘what he knew about acting anyway?’ which replied ‘Nothing.’
Chizuru started to speak that there’s plenty of 19-year old actresses like her that could steal shows and that just wasn’t talented enough. Kazuya lost himself and yelled at Chizuru not to give up, that he wouldn’t her. He promised to get a job and rent her for every week from now on so she could achieve her dream. Chizuru told Kazuya ‘he needs to get into reality’.
But back home at her dorm as her tears dropped at just ‘warming up’ the crowd for the ‘real lead’ it was Kazuya’s rental notification emails that brought on a smile.
Kazuya truly didn’t want her to give up and cared about her.
