This interview contains spoilers for Toradora!
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT (NIR REGEV): Do you see a Toradora! Season 2 someday or is there simply not enough source material for it? Fans have been asking for it for years and years. I’m sure you’d love to do it.
ERIK SCOTT KIMERER: Oh yeah! I would do Toradora! Season 2 in a heartbeat!
If there was a second season… I feel there’s not a lot of anime that has dealt with people who are just starting in a relationship and how they navigate that relationship. That’s where a Season 2 could shine.
There’s a lot of anime that deals with the build up to the relationship starting and that’s usually the climax of the anime. The end of an anime is usually when they admit their love to each other or kiss for the first time.
The source material is complete and the anime ran through the entire course of it. Didn’t alter the ending or anything, kept true to it. So it’s one of the rare anime shows that does that.
I just don’t think there’s a story left to tell currently. I mean there could be as I mentioned, but it could also be much of the same.
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: Did you personally like the ending? I honestly wasn’t a fan of Taiga leaving Ryuuji like that. But I did like the post-credit scene where Ryuuji finds Taiga in the class locker and it seems they’re back together.
ERIK SCOTT KIMERER: That was a weird emotional detour… But yeah, I thought it was good. It was a perfect ending for these two.
It stops right in that moment. This is what we were leading towards and whatever happens afterwards, you can fill it on your own.
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: I’m amazed Toradora! Season 2 hasn’t been made already because the anime industry is a business like any other at the end of the day. There’s so much fan demand for it, seems financially safe.
ERIK SCOTT KIMERER: Me too! I think the story was really well self-contained and ended perfectly. It’s rare for anime to really have that solid front-to-back 25 episode run again.
I would love to do more. I love Ryuuji. I love the story. I love the characters.
I just want it to be a good story. I want it to do justice to our name.
