This Walking Dead interview took place during a press day roundtable over Zoom.
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT (NIR REGEV): There’s a scene at Governor Milton’s Masquerade Ball in “New Haunts” where Magna is working as a waitress and serving Yumiko.
You can really see the class division & social stratification, almost reminiscent of The Purge.
It’s clear there for the first time that Magna & Yumiko came from two different worlds and kind have returned to their starting spots. I was wondering what it was like to film the moment?
NADIA HILKER: Oh, I hated it. I hated it! I don’t know, when I read the script, I was convinced that Magna would find a way to get out of there and convince everyone around her to do the same… But then because of the differences in the classes and how they treated people, she felt responsible and wanted to help and make a change.
That’s pretty much the world we’re living in, you know, on this planet. And yeah, for me as Magna, it feels like, it was better out there than being in The Commonwealth. You’re a prisoner.
Magna being a waitress and then also, serving her ex-girlfriend, she’s been having issues with that.
She felt like that humiliated her. Like Yumiko looked down on Magna for being a waitress, while she’s an attorney. A lot of mixed feelings… Really, a lot of mixed feelings!
If there’s one wish that could come true is that I would’ve loved to see Magna’s backstory. Where she & Yumiko came from. A hundred percent!
I have always loved the episodes where it’s really focused on the character. I love it.
There’s nothing more that I love in a TV program than to show a character and where they originated from and where they came from.
It just connects you to them so much more. So yeah, I think that would be awesome for every one of us to be able to see our origin stories.
To see how we came to this point, see all the people that we lost. It only connects fans more!
I think that’s just like one of the coolest journeys to see on a TV show.
That ASL is the most beautiful language in the world!
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT (NIR REGEV): Thanks Nadia!
NADIA HILKER: Thank you!
