THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT (NIR REGEV): What were your first thoughts when “Stuck on you” was licensed as the ending theme song to anime series, ‘More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers.’?
NOWLU: I felt like I was floating in the air. It was like it wasn’t about me. During recording, I was so focused on the song that I couldn’t think about it much, so I didn’t really get a sense of it until after it was recorded.
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: Did you have any creative input on the anime visuals of Akari Watanabe presented in the ending theme of each episode? If not, what were your first impressions upon seeing the show’s visuals matching your song?
NOWLU: In the first and second episodes, I felt as if the song was not my own, but as I repeated it in the third and fourth episodes, I felt more comfortable with it.
I was very happy to see that the taste of the song was different from the pictures in the main story, as if the animation team had contributed it for this song!
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: Do you now receive a big reaction from live audiences when performing “Stuck on you” since the anime release of ‘More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers.’?
NOWLU: I have not performed it live yet, but if I were to sing it live, I would want the audience to meditate and feel the song with their whole body.
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: What do you feel is the biggest challenge vocally to performing “Stuck on you” live compared to a studio setting?
NOWLU: Since this song is sung with a mixture of my softest voice, I would like to be careful how to control the tension and excitement on stage and sing softly.
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: Are you a classically trained Jazz vocalist? Your vocal style is exceptionally soothing.
NOWLU: Thank you very much. I have taken a few vocal lessons, but I am conscious of changing my singing style to fit the song, without fixing my vocal style.
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: Did others recognize your music talent from early childhood?
NOWLU: I have been dancing since I was a child and singing since I was about 19 years old, and I feel that the Lantis audition was the first time I was recognized as a music artist!
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: Who are some of your favorite singers that inspire you as an artist?
NOWLU: About 10 years ago, Justin Bieber’s voice came on the radio and I said, “Who is this voice?” I was shocked! His voice made me listen to music with a focus on his “voice,” whereas I used to listen to music with a focus on melody and groove.
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: Will you be coming stateside to perform shows in New York City or Los Angeles? Would you consider performing at Anime NYC 2023 if asked to be a featured guest?
NOWLU: Unfortunately, I don’t have any plans yet, so please read on!
THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: What are your thoughts on the ‘More than a Married Couple, but Not Lovers.’ anime series? In my opinion, “Stuck on you” is the best ending theme song to any anime released in 2022.
NOWLU: Thank you very much! The last scene seemed to remind me that “this is what youth was like”. It was very impressive!
