Warning: This Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 3 premiere review contains minor spoilers for the purposes of reviewing.
The main draw of this series has always been lead Subaru Natsuki’s return from death reset ability. A chance to do it right and learn from your mistakes that we don’t get to do in real life. If you’re a video game fan, it’s like catnip and dually true. Subaru’s ability is the gateway superpower that keeps you coming back.
While we don’t get to see the ability till late in the Re:Zero Season 3 premiere, once it happens you’re absolutely hooked all over again. When you add in a charismatic new lead villain with a powerful introduction scene, you got a winning formula. The final 10 minutes of Re:Zero Season 3 Episode 1 easily make up for the first half’s recap filler moments.
That said… Early on, Re:Zero Season 3 spends a bit too much time with basically reintroductions of every other character in the series. No matter how marginal. It’s obvious it was done to get old fans back in the flow but it might deter newcomers from becoming freshly invested.
You’re either in or you’re out at this point of the series. I can’t see a newcomer tuning in for the first time in Season 3 understanding what the White Whale arc is about with or without the constant recall references.
Don’t expect major plot advances like Rem waking up, though we do get to see Subaru talking to her with a beautiful backing soundtrack from outside of a window. Beautiful anime cinematography there.
On some level though Subaru has regressed back to an unconfident pushover when it comes to Emilia. Their relationship has seemingly taken a few steps back and Emilia is a bit detached compared to last season. Emilia mentions them kissing at one point but only to correct him that Betty (Beatrice) is not their child in front of an outsider. Basically, comedy fodder.
On one side, Subaru chasing after Emilia is necessary to drive Season 3’s motivations for him… On the other side, it feels off for their relationship not to advance more at this point in the series. Almost like they’re ultimately building Rem as the eventual ‘waking’ love interest.
A definite highlight in Re:Zero Season 3 is seeing Reinhard Van Astrea’s father walk in and instantly change the entire group’s mood with a single sentence. Though we won’t reveal why.
Personally, I’m neutral on new character and songstress Liliana Masquerad’s introduction to the series. Currently, she reminds me of a bit of Felt in her art design but with a hyper personality.
Liliana’s best moment in the Re:Zero Season 3 premiere is demanding Subaru pay her since he listened to her sing in public. ‘You’re not trying to get a free one are you?’ Hopefully, we see more of that.
Overall, the Re:Zero Season 3 Premiere ends on a great cliffhanger and serves as the best reminder of why you loved the anime series to begin with.
