Spoiler Warning: This interview contains spoilers for That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Tears of the Azure Sea.

THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT (NIR REGEV): How are you getting the word out about the post-credit scene in ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Tears of the Azure Sea’? I didn’t realize there was going to be one and almost stopped watching the credits just prior. Then suddenly there was more.

ALLEGRA CLARK: Thank you for reminding me! So now I can just be like, everyone stay until there’s a post-credits scene! Ryan did you even know there’s a post-credit scene?

RYAN REYNOLDS: I don’t think so! (laughs) I mean, I know what I recorded, but I don’t know where everything shows up.

ALLEGRA CLARK: You got to stay until the end!

THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: There’s a quote in the movie that really stayed with me by the Great Empress, that there’s “Nothing more expensive than something given for free.” I was wondering your thoughts on that quote?

ALLEGRA CLARK: I mean it’a definitely true. You know, something that is given to you is sometimes a lot of work to maintain. And just because something comes easily doesn’t make it easy. Everything requires work, whether it’s a relationship, a career, everything. And so you will always get out of it what you are willing to put into it.

RYAN REYNOLDS: Yeah, it’s a real double edged sword there too. I think sometimes when things are given to us, we don’t appreciate them as much. So I think part of that too is, understanding that, appreciating what you’ve been given and treating it as such. So I think yeah, absolutely what you said Allegra. But just as a little follow up.

ALLEGRA CLARK: Yeah, I like that follow up!

THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: Allegra, you have quite a bit of humming as Yura in the film. I was wondering if that was all caught in the first take? Or if you did any kind of research beforehand?

ALLEGRA CLARK: I do, I have a lot of humming! (laughs) I did a different hum for every single one, every single time was a fresh take.

I specifically wanted to make sure that Yura’s mindset and why she’s choosing to hum felt organic to the moment itself. So the performance was always in knowing like, okay, she’s very nostalgic right now or she’s feeling guilty or any number of things.

So there’s always a reason behind it. The way it worked from a recording standpoint is, Austin (Sisk) played the song for me and I listened to it a couple of times until I had it, and then I just went in and jumped around.

We did all of the humming kind of in one shot in the sense that we did the first time. And then we went to the next instance of humming, just so that we were always in that space. And I knew that I was vocally warm and everything, so it would sound nice.

So I got a weird little preview of the of the entire movie, just from all the times I was like, “Okay, we’re jumping to the next humming! Oh God, what’s going on here?” Like, like some of the more dire moments where she’s humming, I was like, “Oh, God, what what happened? How did we get to this place?”

It was very exciting! So I got a little preview of everything and then got to go back and experience it all in real time.

RYAN REYNOLDS: I had a similar experience with yelling and screaming because we tried to kind of put those in a little bit at a time. So I wouldn’t damage anything.

And so, yeah, we kind of went in a non-linear fashion as well, just to scream a little bit here. Power up a little bit here.

ALLEGRA CLARK: Yeah. It’s like, “Oh, it’s the end of the session. But I know you have a big scream coming up in a scene that you haven’t done yet. So do you want to just get that out of the way because it’s a Friday?” (laughs)

Sometimes those decisions are made specifically with the purpose of maintaining vocal health.

THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: When you were approached about this film, did you know it was pretty much going to be Yura and Gobta’s story at the forefront?

ALLEGRA CLARK: I had no idea when I auditioned for it. Because I got the audition and I thought, she seemed really cool. And I was like, “Yeah, I’ll give it a shot.”

I saw from the sides that Yura was definitely chatting with Gobta a lot… But I had no idea that the film was going to focus on him to that extent until I got into the booth and I was told for the first time. I was like, “This is actually like, Gobta is the hero of the movie.”

And I was like, interesting, let’s go~ Like, I love the little guy as the hero.

THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: How about you, Ryan? Did you see this prominent leading role for Gobta and potential romance elements for him?

RYAN REYNOLDS: I was kind of told that he was going to have a more prominent role. But I did not know about the relationship element. So there were certain points in the movie where I was like, “Oh my God. Like really?!” So that was great. I’m really glad actually that element of it was kept from me.

I just thought, you know, I’d be fighting a lot. So I didn’t know.

ALLEGRA CLARK: With anime and games and a lot of things like that, we don’t really get the scripts ahead of time. Very rarely in games. And definitely in anime, I never see the script ahead of time. And since there was no direct source material for this story, it’s a completely original story for the anime. There was nothing for me to look up and be like, “So okay, so what’s going to happen here?”

Everything that happened, I was kind of experiencing it for the first time and I had no idea anything was going to happen until we got to that moment, which was a little stressful.

Sometimes I like being spoiled. I like being spoiled on things. It soothes my anxiety! But as an actor, it was a very thrilling recording session for that reason.

THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: What were the recording sessions like with Austin (Sisk)? Did he provide you particular tips or did you have your own characterizations of Yura and Gobta envisioned in your minds?

RYAN REYNOLDS: Austin is an incredible director! He’s wonderful to work with. He keeps things really light and he knows the story so, so, so well! He knows his characters really well.

For me, yes, I’ve been doing Gobta for a really long time, but Gobta has kind of been in and out of the show. He kind of flips in for a little while, does something funny, you know, has an action scene, kind of flips back out of the picture again.

And so there was a lot of like working to figure out: Who is Gobta when he’s not just straight up comic relief? Who is Gobta in a serious situation and what is he like?

What is quiet Gobta like? That’s a really big challenge for me, not only from a perspective of like, where do I put myself mentally, but how do I actually achieve this vocally? Where does he set, how do I do this?

And my voice has has gone through a lot of changes. Just from when I first started the role, my voice was was much, much higher. So a lot of it too has been like, “How do I do this with with a voice that sounds different and feels different than whenever I first started?”

ALLEGRA CLARK: With Yura, I was obviously developing the character for the first time, but I had Austin there to give me the full context and let me know who who Gobta was so that I could really, truly play off of Gobta.

I recorded first, so I didn’t have Ryan in my ear. I didn’t get to hear Ryan until the very, very end of the movie when they caught up with me and passed me in terms of a having recorded through everything.

But with Yura again, it was just having Austin’s guidance and letting me know from a narrative standpoint what hole they were trying to thread? Where do I put the thread through the needle? Like what were they trying to accomplish with it so that I could always be thinking in service of that story?

What is Yura doing to change Gobta in that moment? What do I need to do to motivate that change? What is Yura doing to make Gobta to look back on what he had said and go, “Oh, I did do that. Or oh, that’s how you see things?” or anything along those lines.

So Austin was definitely very helpful and really helped introduce me to the world as well, because this was my first experience with the with the Slime franchise.

THE NATURAL ARISTOCRAT: Allegra you’re very popular now after you voiced Mitsuru Kirijo in Persona 3 Reload and Ryan I remember you from Darling in the Franxx as Zorome. What does it mean to you both to essentially be the lead roles in ‘That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Tears of the Azure Sea’? On the rise so to speak.

ALLEGRA CLARK: I think it’s an honor! You always gotta love the movies. They have very compact storytelling and the way that there’s a very, very clear and defined beginning, middle and end. You know, that and like a shorter series that don’t have multiple seasons, sometimes the storytelling is very specific.

The storytelling in this one was very specific beginning to end. And yeah, I definitely I did not anticipate this. I didn’t anticipate the story being what it was. when I first got the audition. It was a really, really beautiful story! A beautiful film, both visually and emotionally. So it’s a real honor to help get to tell that story.

RYAN REYNOLDS: Yeah, for me, I mean, it’s super special. When I first started playing Gobta, it’s always been like, ‘Is he going to come back? Will I get to do this again?’ And you know, sometimes there’s months. There may even be years. It feels like years often in between when I get to spend that time with Gobta.

So to get to do this and have such a concentrated amount of time to get to spend with Gobta… And to have him go from, you know, this powerless little hobgoblin to somebody that’s carrying so much of this film, it’s just– It’s really cool. It’s really special.
