Suzuki=Bakudan is our pick for best film of Fantasia 2026
Review Score: 9 – Suzuki=Bakudan’s portrayal of terrorism is so hyper realistic, it’s downright terrifying. The film is a thrilling, rollercoaster ride of controlled chaos. Easily our pick for the best movie of the 2026 Fantasia Film Festival… We just hope the rigged up vending machines on the subway platform presented in the film don’t give dangerous ideas to people.

Suzuki=Bakudan is a multi-layered movie, rich in its analysis of human nature. Picture unreliable homeless vagabond Tagosaku Suzuki played brilliantly by actor Jiro Sato, stumbling into a police station, saying he has premonitions of bombings before they happen.
Police department heads dismissive of evacuation, lest they take responsibility for delayed commutes. Preschool perimeters secured while homeless encampments are fully ignored and vulnerable… Proving Suzuki’s thesis of the public not valuing “freeloaders”.

Perhaps, most engrossing is Suzuki promising to show older detective Yuko Hasebe (Masaya Kato) the shape of his heart. When Hasebe fails to figure out Suzuki’s next target, he breaks Suzuki’s finger, leading Suzuki to laugh and show his mangled finger as the shape of Hasebe’s heart.
But no scene is stronger than police being unable to locate Suzuki’s promise on the subway platforms, calling it a bluff out of commuter pressure more than an in-depth sweep.

As a result, helpless commuters press the vending machine button to meet their ends. It’s a scene that will stay with you forever. Authority figures shepherding thousands of victims to total unrealized danger under the veneer of full security.
The only flaw of this film is it’s too realistic in its execution. From the opening tragedy in Akihabara all the way to the subway platform chaos… Some ideas make incredible films but introduce dangerous concepts that might be best locked away from society for its own good. You’ll think twice the next time you click a vending machine button for a soda, that’s for sure. But as a film, it’s a must watch.
