This Barry Season 4 Episode 3 review & recap contains spoilers for “you’re charming”.
Recap: In tonight’s Barry, Sally Reed starts her forced acting hiatus (maybe ‘retirement’) as an acting teacher with a student named Kristen… Who didn’t even bother preparing for her class.
Years in the business clue Sally in. Kristen has already booked a job because of her looks, despite a total lack of passion or respect toward the acting craft.
Sally begins to question Kristen about why she wants to be in her class at all? If it’s because people tell her she’s “so pretty” and “charming”, that “she should be an actress”?
Kristen nervously stumbles over her words as Sally goes full throttle into the kill. Sally asks Kristen if ‘she wants to be an artist or just be a perfect set of T & A?’
Sally twists the verbal knife further when Kristen accuses her of “being mean”.
“Oh, are you a child? Nobody’s ever been mean to you before? You think it’s because of your great personality? Or because everyone you’ve ever met just wanted to f*** you?!” – Sally Reed
Sally then tells Kristen “not to think, just say the lines’ and Kristen emotes a life changing performance of her lines.
To Sally’s surprise, the rest of the class is disgusted by her actions, adding multiple layers to the scene.
They call Sally’s use of Gene Cousineau’s “acting method” to be “abuse” and “just because it was done to her, it doesn’t mean it has to be done to them.”
Sally calls for a tight 5 minute break as her voice breaks… Realizing what she’s done to others, and what has been done to her.
It’s not however, the first time Sally has been ticked off over the lack of meritocracy in the acting industry. If you recall in Barry Season 2 Episode 7, Sally was furious Barry booked a role based on his 6’2 height on the spot.
Surprisingly, the only acting student to return to Sally’s class is Kristen after the break. Who asks Sally to be her acting coach for her booked role. Layers upon layers.
Everything about this scene from the pacing, to the facial expressions, to the gradual volume & anger in Sally Reed is perfect. A must watch scene that can stand out individually, even if you’ve never seen a single episode of Barry as a series. It’s that rare scene that has a universal appeal and understanding. Which is why it gets an equally rare score of a 10 out of 10.
Amazing performance by Sarah Goldberg. You can already pencil her in for an Emmy nomination.
For those wondering, yes that was indeed Oscar winning Director Guillermo del Toro on Barry Season 4 Episode 3 tonight! Guillermo del Toro naturally played the character of’Toro’ in the opening minutes of “you’re charming” across from NoHo Hank and Cristobal Sifuentes.
NoHo Hank had a comedic critique on a podcast two of Toro’s hitman were working on. A gadget audio podcast where you have to imagine the technology if you’re driving. Unless you’re willing to pull over your car and click on a corresponding YouTube link.
Great intimidating facial expressions from Guillermo del Toro here to make NoHo Hank back down. “I’ll pull over and click the link from now on!”
