“The B Story” starts off with the revelation that Freddy lets his intellectual side take the spotlight when drunk. Frasier couldn’t be more proud of his son say the words ‘pontificate’ and ‘reductive’.

It turns out that Freddy was actively suppressing his Crane ‘intelligence’ the whole time! He also is fond of conducting magic tricks when under the spell of the drink.

David had been granted permission by Frasier to do a rewrite of his B.F. Skinner paper and they’d average the two grades. Freddy quickly deduces that he’d need a score of a perfect 100 to get an A, which sends David into a panic.

He believes Niles will send him to trade school if he brings home a B. David makes reference to Niles actually referring to ‘UPenn’ as a trade school. What a line on the university!

Nevertheless, David notices Freddy’s intellectual prowess and asks to be his designated driver for the night.

Meanwhile, Frasier pretends to bump into Olivia and Provost Sharma at the bar after being tipped off by Olivia.

The charming is in full throttle, almost saccharine as Frasier would say… Until the Provost speaks of not being a fan of bars or his staff drinking. Frasier then makes the mistake of a white lie that he rarely drinks.

The whole conversation goes south afterwards as Eve calls Frasier a regular at the bar and a drunk Freddy digs the whole even further.

Olivia decides to cut the conversation short and take the Provost out the door before any more damage can be done.

She later tells Frasier that Provost Sharma now believes Frasier is a drunk. Olivia comments that Frasier should forget the review board to earn the professor title and just try applying again next year. But Frasier will not relent.

A friendly meeting goes haywire back at campus when Frasier tells Alan to get rid of his drink before the Provost arrives… Leading Alan to pour it in one of the coffee mugs Frasier has prepared. But which one is it?

Provost Sharma turns out to have the ‘spiked’ coffee and Frasier desperately tries to get the Provost to switch mugs with him.

Frasier elaborates that coffee was meant for him and when the Provost takes a sip, he asks if, “There’s brandy in this coffee?” Alan corrects the Provost that it’s actually rum.

David’s paper with Freddy’s assistance does not obtain the A he was looking for. Making David lose his sanity. His uncle Frasier is stung by a bee and needs an epipen which David has. But David refuses to give the epipen unless Frasier changes his grade to an A.

Frasier agrees to give 60 seconds to hear out David’s views on B.F. Skinner and still won’t give him more than a B+. However, David relents and gives his uncle the epipen.

Freddy wants to take Frasier to the hospital after the epipen shot, but Frasier rushes out to the review board.

Frasier arrives to the review board, appearing like an actual drunk from the effects of the epipen shot. He soon goes to the floor and says “I have the floor”. The Provost decides to put Frasier on probation rather than grant his professorship.

Meanwhile, David considers dropping out of Harvard because of his B grade… And how he’d almost harmed his uncle over it. Freddy actually talks him out of it and seems to miss being at University.

Hinting toward Freddy returning to school in future episodes, maybe? Also it seems increasingly likely by the day that David Hyde Pierce might at least make a cameo.
