Blu-ray Review: ‘The Dangers in My Heart’ Season 1 Complete Collection features:
● All 12 episodes with the option of an English Dub, Japanese original audio with English subtitles, or English dubbed with English subtitles as a hearing accessibility feature.
● Large accessible fonts for in-episode Japanese to English translations. The white font used is outlined with a bold black on the edges, so it doesn’t blend in with the animation.
● Bonus ‘clean’ unmarked Opening Intros / Ending outros without cast & staff text super imposed on the animation itself.
Also, included is the original Japanese web preview* promos for all 12 episodes. All these bonuses are included on Disc 2.
* Note: There is no English dubbed version of the web previews and they do not feature English subtitles.
● Noticeably better image quality using the Blu-ray’s AVC 1080p video codec (H.264) to the streaming version found on the Xbox 360’s HIDIVE app.
While the difference is not quite as stark as Rent-a-Girlfriend’s Season 1 Blu-ray to its streaming edition, you can definitely tell the premium Blu-ray quality difference.

ToggleBlu-ray Menu
Both Discs
– After an initial legal notice, HIDIVE promo and Sentai logo intro you’ll be presented with the Blu-ray menu.
Note: These were all unskippable on the PlayStation 5 console this Blu-ray collection was viewed on. Including on repeated viewings. If you eject the disc, you’ll have to watch them again.
While unskippable promos are a regular Blu-ray fixture… Those used to ‘instant click’ streams on HIDIVE and Crunchyroll will start taking note of ‘lag time before play’ if they swap anime Blu-rays often.
– The show’s intro theme song『Shayou』by Yorushika infinitely loops in all menu options. Disc specific differences below.
Disc 1:
– On Disc 1, you’ll find the first nine episodes of Season 1 along with language options.
As mentioned earlier, you’ll have English audio, English audio with English subtitles (for the hearing impaired), and Japanese audio with English subtitles as options on both discs.
The audio used is English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 or Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 depending on your preference.
Disc 2:
– Disc 2 contains episodes 10 – 12. * Keep in mind there is a Season 2 currently simulcasting on HIDIVE, so episode 12 is not the end of the series.
You’ll find the same language options as in Disc 1 and a ‘Special Features’ section. More on that below:
Blu-ray Extras
– In the ‘Special Features’ section you’ll find the original Japanese web promos for Season 1. These are presented in a fun manga inspired way with character captions at the bottom.
You’ll have to forward through if you want to see a specific episode promo. Careful not to forward too quickly or you’ll reach the end instead of the promo you were looking for. * These web promos as mentioned earlier do not contain English subtitles or an English dub but are a nice bonus.
– Next, you’ll find clean Opening and Ending theme videos, a Sentai anime Blu-ray staple. The opening theme video features song『Shayou』by Yorushika. While the ending theme video features song『Suu Sentimental』by Kohana Lam.
Both videos feature crisp animation with no superimposed staff or cast text.
– Finally there’s a disc credits section for those interested in who put together this Blu-ray collection.
Opening English and Romaji Subtitles
– ‘The Dangers in My Heart’ episodes open with either both English & Romaji (phonetically written Japanese to English), English alone, or Romaji alone.
The subtitle style appears to rotate every three episodes.
Blu-ray Accessibility Features
– In-episode English translations of Japanese signs, phone text messages, events and so forth have large legible white fonts with a bold black outline. They also appear on screen for a healthy amount of time where you’re not missing something and need to rewind.
Blu-ray Image Quality
– Noticeably superior to streaming the series on HIDIVE on the Xbox 360 app. Especially when it comes to the lack of lag when forwarding through an episode. Also looks significantly better to streaming on HIDIVE web.
Keep in mind, that the English dub of this series is not available through the HIDIVE Prime Channel but the picture quality there is a bit more comparable.
The Blu-ray’s 1080p HD AVC codec makes the animation really pop, a great transfer. That said, you don’t quite get that ‘Wow’ factor like in the ‘Rent-a-Girlfriend’ Season 1 Blu-ray where the animation quality between disc & streaming is almost a new world. Where you suddenly notice intricate details in the art you never saw before in the stream.
Blu-ray Audio Quality
– The whimsical series soundtrack by Kensuke Ushio sounds great on the Blu-ray. “Ichikawa Irritiated” being a particularly memorable character theme throughout. The intro and ending themes sung by Yorushika and Kohana Lam respectively encapsulate the feel of the series.
Audio quality isn’t necessarily a central factor to the plot itself compared to a show like ‘Anonymous Noise’ but is enjoyable nonetheless here.
English Dub Cast Review
– The three English dub VA standouts here are Katelyn Barr as Anna Yamada, Clint Bickham as Kyotaro Ichikawa and Emi Lo as Moeko Sekine. Emi actually sounds a lot like LilyPichu’s Yoshi on ‘Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro‘ here, and that’s a compliment.
Genevieve Simmons’s Kana Ichikawa plays up the teasing sister vocally. Call of the Night‘s Natalie Rial plays Yamada’s shy friend Honoka Hara here, and the character is quite a departure vocally & plot wise from Nazuna Nanakusa.
You’ll hear Greg Ayres here in a minor role as Kenta Kanzaki and there’s in no way you won’t recognize that voice. In our opinion, ‘Hajime Muroto’ in Gantz and ‘Monokuma’ in Danganronpa remains his best roles.
‘The Dangers in my Heart’ English dub revolves around the vocal performances of Yamada and Ichikawa. Bickham’s vocalization of Ichikawa’s inner thoughts is what you’ll most take away from the English dub cast, performance wise.
Anime like ‘The Dangers in my Heart’
‘The Dangers in My Heart’ is a classic rom-com comfort anime. It’s most similar to the following anime shows:
– ‘Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!’ (similar wholesome lead female romantic character)
– ‘My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU’ (similar teenage angst in male lead character. * Minus dramatic elements.)
– ‘Don’t Toy with me, Miss Nagatoro‘ (similar nervous romantic feelings on both sides. * Minus the teasing.)
– ‘Horimiya’ [Season 1] (similar alternate edgy / emo-ish lead male character. * Minus dramatic elements.)
– ‘Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie‘ (similar comfort rom-com, no overt drama. Similar jealousy elements)
– ‘3D Kanojo Real Girl’ (similar plot device of lead male character discovering he likes the female lead he once saw as an antagonist. * Minus heavy dramatic elements of that series.)
If you liked any of the romance genre anime shows above, you’ll enjoy ‘The Dangers in My Heart’.
Characters & Plot Overview
– The Dangers in My Heart is a classic comfort romance comedy anime. It does start off strangely with angsty teen Kyotaro Ichikawa plotting to take out popular girl Anna Yamada for invading his library space. But as the episodes pass, Ichikawa falls for Yamada more and more and helps her every time he’s able.
For all his initial edginess, Ichikawa shows himself to be a sensitive teen who’s built himself a dark shell to retreat to… To avoid getting his feelings hurt. Meanwhile, fun loving girl Anna Yamada is almost vicariously living through her shoju mangas with Ichikawa being the dark brooding type she secretly loves.
Despite being the buxom, beautiful popular girl in school, Yamada is not a protypical gossiping cheerleader type in the least. Yamada has a sensitive side herself, is frequently shy around Ichikawa and can get her feelings hurt with ease by others. She also loves to secretly snack like Aki Adagaki on ‘Masamune-kun’s Revenge’.
The two discovering each other moves at comfortable pace and the plot is not overly syrupy sweet like Season 2 of ‘TONIKAWA: Over The Moon For You’ somewhat devolved into at points.
Common Question: Is ‘The Dangers in my Heart’ on Crunchyroll?
No, it’s a HIDIVE exclusive in the USA market. Both Season 1 and the currently simulcasting Season 2 are HIDIVE exclusives for the time being.
Conclusion
5 out of 5 stars if you’re a fan of the romance anime genre and looking for a new comfort series to watch.
