Review Score: 8.0 – Uzumaki’s sophomore episode feels reminiscent of classic Greek mythology. Kirie Goshima’s hair awakens to life in a parasitic relationship, attempting to suffocate its host when threatened with a cut. A pastiche of Medusa’s hair of snakes and Samson’s legendary locks.

There’s a plethora of fascinating horror visuals & allegories in Uzumaki Episode 2 like an overweight, slow-witted student turning into a literal snail. But the one that stays with you like no other is Kirie Goshima’s hair spiraling out of control and twisting around her neck.
We’ve all heard of a bad hair day where one’s bedhead hair took a life of its own but Uzumaki offers an ever darker & surreal take. There’s a price to pay for being the center of attention and Kirie certainly finds herself at the mercy of her long spiral shaped locks. Strangers, friends, and foes alike are in a state of hypnosis when looking at Kirie’s spiraled hair. Often ending in madness.
One often rejected classmate decides he will show Kirie he can stop a car with his unrequited love… Only to be mowed down in the process under a front tire. Most likely a result of the spiral curse overtaking the town’s collective conscious.
Those that try to help Kirie cut her hair are met with full resistance, one stylist calls her ‘a monster’ after having the locks wrap around her arms. Others jealous of Kirie’s unwanted spotlight try to become the center of attention themselves by falling deep into mania. Challenging Kirie in the schoolyard with her own set of parasitic locks. Who pray on their host’s vanity.
Uzumaki and Karma:

There’s a sense of karma being a major aspect of Uzumaki, with a teacher who crushes a student humanoid snail’s eggs being turned into a snail himself. Or a pair of lovers torn between their parents disapproving being physically twisted together so they can never be separated again.
There’s curious youngsters thrilled to rush to the top of a lighthouse, only to wish they can go back down three times as fast.

Uzumaki Episode 2 is reminiscent of works like short story The Monkey’s Paw by W. W. Jacobs, where a wish or desire comes true with major strings (and consequences) attached.
